This school year marks the 65th year of School District 163ís inception. We are marking that milestone with a new look. We have reconfigured the District and we are opening the Barack Obama School of Leadership and STEM and the Michelle Obama School of Technology and the Arts this school year. The Obama name was selected for the two schools because the values that the First Family models are unparalleled precedents and are values that our students strive to emulate.
While our schools have attendance boundaries, fourth through eighth grade students may apply to the concept school of their choice to pursue their interests. Acceptance is based on criteria that take into account the quality of class work and homework, completed reading logs, attendance rate, behavior, and grade point average. At the Barack Obama School students will receive additional instruction in a technology-based STEM curriculum, take after school courses of their choice related to their interests in technology and be involved in field-based learning. At the Michelle Obama School, students will take after-school courses of their choice related to their interests in performing arts and apply their knowledge to onstage opportunities, stagecraft and music production.
Our primary buildings will be STEAM Exploration Centers with direct, authentic learning experiences using an assortment of materials allowing the learner to design, experiment and create innovative processes.
We are also pleased with the start of the construction of the addition at the Michelle Obama School and with the completion of a new entrance at the Barack Obama School that symbolizes an entry into a new learning experience.
We are excited about these major happenings in School District 163, but there are many more innovations and curriculum additions that will benefit your children. Please take the time to visit our schools. When you do, you will realize how much you have to be proud of as a member of the School District 163 family. Happy 65th Anniversary, School District 163.†
